Let them eat cake.

these are stills from my "Let them eat cake." performance piece. it started from a dream i had before waking about me making a mountain of cakes... then it went into a sculpture assignment loosely based on the story of jacob's ladder. i basically set up some bossa nova tunes and served an audience slices of cake, only the top tier of cake was super delicious chocolate with coconut frosting and flowers on top.. the middle tier was plain jane vanilla icing on yellow cake, and the bottom was disgusting soy-sauce-pickle-juice-salty-cayenne-peppery brown and red frosted masterpiece, which i served most of the audience a slice of. only a few got the middle cake, and i think one person and myself got to eat on the delicious top tiered cake. i love that the cake tipped over and made a huge mess. plus i love the murder shots at the end-- i feel like i killed something.

look ma, my thumbs are dipping into more pies (and cakes, really)

orbs

there have been instances where i feel energy fill my lungs...
an energy not akin to oxygen...
something warm.

i headed west last week to santa fe, stopping through midland, texas to have tea with grandma iva. something pulled me to go see popsi's grave.

perhaps it was him... that familiar warmth filled my cheeks when i finally found his grave,
perhaps orbs are rare instances where light is randomly processed onto a negative
as a human who has believed in santa claus and sasquatch, i don't necessarily believe in the word "orb"
i guess, not just yet...
but...
i felt something that day,
and it might be that what i felt rendered onto my film somehow.

into the void

marfa, texas. march 2008

this is in the chinati foundation -- the copper cylinder a sculpture from an icelandic artist i believe? before we walked into this almost-empty building, we were told only 5 people max should enter at one time. i thought maybe to preserve the sculpture better, but it was mostly so that the fewest people could experience the space. this grabbed me. in a space with so much space, the artist wanted the biggest void for the viewer to soak in a simple yet divine piece. we as americans have this huge tendency to fill out spaces to a ridiculous amount -- its like a room could never just be a room, the character of the walls and the bare floor arent the focus because of your china set, your tv set, portraits of people you have never met...

i would like to see every person as a room, one solitary space enveloped in 4 walls. itd be cluttered with baggage, im guessing, but perhaps one or two would just be glad to just be... a simple room.
